About MaryGloria Pacheco Teppa:

Mary Gloria Pacheco is a Venezuelan sociologist, educator and self-taught artist. Between 2015 and 2018 in Belgium she created the tapestries that make up this exhibition The work, in essence, consists of a reinterpretation of photographs, and the artist utilises thread and pieces of fabric – all of which are sewn by hand.

About 21 Apples:

This exhibition of MaryGloria consists of 21 tapestries, which represent 21 resilient women that – in the 21st century – who have offered concrete responses, individually or collectively, to 21 different types of mostly gender-related violence, in 21 different countries from the five continents.
The works have been prepared from small scraps of fabrics, extracted from various pieces of clothing. These scraps might have covered the bodies of people in the past yet, over time, were forgotten, sold in some old market or thrown away, just like millions of women and children continue to be forgotten, sold, abused or discarded in many parts of the world.
Pacheco’s oeuvre emanates from the sensitive look of a woman who, stitch by stitch, offers a tribute to fellow women – current, real and courageous individuals who have lived firsthand how difficult it can be for a woman to be a part of a patriarchal society and that, despite the conditions of violence they are subjected to, have demonstrated that a better world is possible.
