DANCE-COSTUMING
by Mat Voorter

This workshop is part of ZOO@tictac 2021. More information will come soon.

The Workshop
“I will work with the participants using my experience and creativity that I have in relation to making costumes/scenography for dance-creations. This workshop will be an experiment for participants and me as well. As I never shared my costume making through a workshop, it will be for me as well a challenge how I can make an artistic process by sharing my approaches plus with what every participant brings in. How to create something anew.

Exploring how we can contribute through costume and/or scenography to our dancing and choreography. How can costumes serve the total act of a performance. What can help to enrich the creation. How can we appreciate costume and materials as a gift instead of an obstacle / limitation. A costume can be different than wearing clothing and fashion. We will interact with materials and create something out of it. We might get involved with envisioning, transforming, adapting, breeding, experimenting, laborwork and more laborwork (possibly sewing, knitting, knotting, cutting, building, action etc etc) playtime and dance. The participants will be stimulated to work individually and to collaborate with each other to create something for themselves and others.

We will also spent time dancing and improvising. So we will be working in training-clothes and also will (un)dress ourselves at times to try out costumes. Anyone interested in costume or art or dance-making can join. (Though during Corona times it needs to be in the framework of professional interest.) Looking forward.”

Mat

Mat Voorter
He works with dance and other arts. With ZOO-Thomas Hauert he created-performed in almost all the works since their beginning 20 years ago. Over more than 25 years he worked with his life partner David Zambrano studying, performing, organising and creating costumes for many of the creations. In 2018 together they created Tictac Art Centre in Brussels, a space for dance and other art forms, with a focus in sharing spontaneous creation / improvisation through workshops / performing / exhibitions. Other recent collaborations which he can mention are with Anne Lore Baeckeland (improvising for/with children), NEST (directing and creating costume and scenography with teenagers), Les Slovaks and Cie Thor (costumes, created in collaboration with Pepa Canel).

(Some tools and materials will be provided, but as well the participants will be invited to buy/bring some materials to work with. This can be old clothes and fabrics of any kind.
