Maya M. Carroll

Imagined Made Tangible

The workshop unfolds and explores physical – mental connections; perceptive, intuitive, immediate forms and actions, through which we create and relate with our dancing body. Our process evolves through hands-on practices, solo and partnering work; while observing states of solitude and togetherness, and being immersed in creative imagining. An open-ended approach guides us towards significant elements: listening through touch – space – vibration, recognition and memory, (in)direct connection with other/s, sensitive motion at different rates of speed, intimate presence – individually/collectively, choreographic narratives and performance. The course encourages a deepening and expanding of our creative experience; our social crafting as dance makers, the realities and universes we dream of…and how they are embodied in our shared compositions.

Maya M. Carroll's biography

Maya Matilda Carroll is a choreographer, dancer, mentor and teacher, based in Europe since 2004. Her work has developed over two decades of independent creating and performing; collaborating with other dance artists, musicians, actors, poets and visual artists. Her affinity towards detail, animation, other-worldliness and poetry; meet with human stories through an imaginative exploration of movement vocabulary. As a dancer and performer she collaborated with choreographer Lara Barsacq (1999-2004), Anat Danieli, Sharon Eyal, Arkadi Zaides, Ohad Naharin (2000-2003) and Sasha Waltz & Guests. Since 2013 she collaborates with choreographer and director Julyen Hamilton as a member in Allen's Line Company and in various independent projects. In 2011 Maya formed The Instrument with composer / musician Roy Carroll. Their long-standing collaboration is a unique embodiment of sound and music within which Maya continues developing her choreographic landscapes. Maya leads master classes and workshops in Europe and abroad, extensively developing her teaching alongside her artistic work; drawn from and towards the human, social and poetic manifestation of the dancing body.

'My choreographic work is an embodied expression of primal - cultural longings; rooted in existence which craves creativity. The pieces become immersive universes; a listening space within which the 'real and imagined' are mutually challenged and exposed. In the act of creating and performing I sense the languages of gesture, dance, light, sound/music and image; emerging naked and autonomous. I am moved by a 'knowing / unknowing innocence' which can be transformative for our minds and bodies because it reaches below our opinions and expectations. A place, an emotion, a dream we may all project ourselves through. It is a delicate and raw experience, where I find myself dancing with elements that attract, concern and fascinate me. Each piece is a world, a ritual, a journey; inviting the audience to travel in and through.'
