Daniel Linehan & Michael Helland

Tending and Tuning

Can we reach a state in which “dancing” and “giving attention” mean the same thing?

For Tending and Tuning, Linehan and Helland draw upon 15+ years of shared performance experience, reflecting and elaborating upon diverse dance scores and physical practices.

Favorite pre-performance rituals become a playground for cultivating both subtle and robust forms of attention and engagement with ourselves and our surroundings, as we connect with our immediate environment to inspire new ways of moving and being. From theater to gallery and beyond, we explore performance as a hybrid medium to discover the edges of bodily consciousness, shared physical presence, and sense of place. We return to the fundamentals of the body in motion: breath, circularity, vibration, and waves of catharsis.

With an eye on longevity and vitality, we work to embody radical resiliency through creative care-taking and otherworldly movement-based adventures.

Daniel Linehan & Michael Helland's biography

Daniel Linehan’s choreographic work is intent on softly obscuring the line that separates dance from everything else. Linehan first studied dance in Seattle and then moved to New York in 2004. In 2007, he premiered the solo Not About Everything, which has since been presented in over 75 venues internationally. In 2008, Linehan moved to Brussels where he completed the Research Cycle at P.A.R.T.S., and established the dance company Hiatus in 2014, which is supported by the Flemish authorities. He is regularly invited as a guest teacher and mentor at dance institutions worldwide.

Michael Helland works at the crossroads of theatrical presentation, exhibition-based contexts, and public art modalities. He makes creative interventions aimed to foster social connectivity and help communities face the dark uncertainty of the future. Since completing the Yoga Conscious Living & Spiritual Activism program and receiving his certificate in Ayurvedic Yoga Massage, he offers intuitive bodywork rituals and public classes on a regular basis. Helland holds degrees in Dance and in Community, Environment, and Planning from the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was an Integrated Graduate Education Research Training Fellow in Urban Ecology.
