Chakamadesu

Chakamadesu is a technique developed by the teacher, choreographer, performer and dancer Jolie Ngemi Reymond. Her artistic work includes here origin (Congo) and various influences. She has explored spirituality, physicality, voice and rhythm. She has developed her unique style, which has intense and powerful technicality, including improvisation, rhythms, speed and grounding to the floor providing strength. For the work power, precision and control is needed and will be worked on.

Participants will be guided through a full sense of trust in the whole process which allows peoples to go deep and feel comfortable and be supported while doing it. They will be guided through improvisation, starting with concentration exercises, leading into physicalising certain imagery already created in their mind.
Spirituality and trancing will also be part of Chakamadesu. People will be asked to travel to memories, stories of their past, present and future. We are going to touch different states, drunken, laughter, crying, liberation… With Chakamadesu the emotional state will be touched intensively.
In the workshop Jolie will encourage the participants to develop their own way of moving in the space, using their own skill and propositions shared by Jolie.

Chakamadesu is a study on many levels: physical, emotional, artistic, mental and personal and also as a group. It will offer as well an intense leg workout and working with gravity. Overall, Chakamadesu is a way to surprise yourself, while practicing how to move through space. Fluidity, getting grounded to the floor, embodiment, letting oneself in to the dance, to trance, and using jerky movements are all part of the technicality of Chakamadesu.
Jolie has the ability to take you from wild to delicate to deep. Chakamadesu is intended to be a tasty, healthy and complete experience. The idea is that at the end of the workshop, everyone can leave the room with their own Chakamadesu Code.

Jolie Ngemi’s biography:

olie Ngemi Reymond is a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and musician. She lives in Switzerland and works internationally. Congolese by nationality, born in Kinshasa on 16 April 1989. Jolie has been practicing dance professionally since 2000 and has obtained other diplomas and certificates in the artistic field.
She started dancing in the Protestant church from Kinshasa. As a teenager, she danced in the Rue Des Danses Urbains Hip-hop. At the age of 17 she met the choreographer Jacque Bana Yanga with whom she deepened her contemporary dance skills. With this experience, she has gone through almost all the stages that make up the story of a dancer of the new generation. In 2008 she was part of a creation by choreographer Thomas Steyeart. The creation was touring in Africa as well as in Europe. In 2011, she collaborates with Ula Sicle and Yann Leguay, while creating a solo called Jolie. In 2012 she was invited to the U.S.A. to represent women at the festival “New York Live Arts’” in 2012. In 2013 she was accepted to study at P.A.R.T.S, where she trained for two years. Afterwards, she was discovered by the choreographer Boris Charmatz which led to the realization of two “night dance” shows. The first one on the story of Charlie Hebdo, and the “night dance” show 10,000 gestures” which toured in France, Belgium, England, Germany, Switzerland, and other countries… In 2015, she was part of the project “SAL-TO” by David Zambrano.  She created her solo show “Identity na ngayi” in 2018 in Geneva for the festival “La Bâtie”. It was presented in Geneva, Bale, Brussels, and Utrecht. Jolie is also part of the creation Wakatt by Serge Aimé Coulibaly’s Faso Danse Théâtre (since 2020).
Today she teaches in several institutions such as La Manufacture (Switzerland), the Academy of Theater and Dance in Amsterdam, or Tictac Art Centre. In September 2021 she created the Bosnagani Festival in Kinshasa.
